Frank Mogridge patented the first batting helmet back in 1905. At that point, it was known as a “head protector.” The protector was described as an “inflatable glove that wrapped around the hitters head." Because of injuries to the player's heads, the more conventional models came about in the late 1930s. It wasn't until 1941 when a model (created by brain surgeon George Bennett) that the National League adopted the use of helmets. Even then, mandatory use didn't start until the 1950s.
