Although the Detroit Red Wings red and white jersey with the ‘winged wheel’ logo on the front is one of the most recognizable jerseys in professional sports, it has not always looked as we are used to seeing it. The team first hit the ice in 1926 and is considered one of the ‘Original Six’ NHL teams. The jersey colors have always been red and white, but in the first few seasons, the jerseys had a thick red stripe through the midsection with a giant old English-style letter ‘D’ in white. In 1927 that changed and the word ‘Detroit’ appeared in red over the top a red Cougar head as the team was then known as the Detroit Cougars.
A white jersey had red stripes for accent on the sleeves. In 1930 the jerseys changed again along with the team name. Still mostly white with red stripes on the sleeves and above the yellow words ‘Detroit Falcons.’ The final change was in 1932 when new ownership named the team the Red Wings and added the ‘winged wheel’ logo that the team still carries on their jerseys today.
