History Of The Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers hockey franchise was granted to Blockbuster Video magnate Wayne Huizenga the same day in December 1992 as the league granted the Walt Disney Company their franchise in Anaheim, California. Huizenga was no stranger to major league professional sports as he also owned the Florida Marlins Major League Baseball team and was a shareholder in the Miami Dolphin’s National Football League team.
The team is named in honor of the Florida panther which happens to be an endangered species of large cat that is native to the area near the team home that is commonly identified as the Everglades. The team started to play in the NHL in the 1993-1994 season alongside the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and both teams used the expansion and 1993 Entry Draft hosted in Quebec City to fill their rosters. It proved to be a smart business move as a total of ten players from that draft ended up on the 1996 Eastern Conference Championship team. The team also finished its first season with just under .500 just missing the last playoff spot in the division which ended up being one of the most successful first seasons of any NHL expansion team.
While the front office projected much of the team success would come from Canadians wintering in Florida, the locals proved to be just as crazy about hockey and embraced the team almost immediately. While there was initially concern that the Tampa Bay Lightning may cause some difficulty in the franchise getting a foothold in the region that has not happened.
The team colors are red, blue, gold and white and they play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.
A number of hockey greats have played for the Florida Panthers including Scott Mellanby (1993-2001), Olli Jokinen (2005-2008), John Vanbiesbrouck (1993-1998), Paul Laus (1993-2002), Robert Svehla (1995-2002), Pavel Bure (1999-2002), Brian Skrudland (1993-1997), Robert Luongo (2000-2006) and Rob Niedermayer (1993-2001).
The Florida Panthers have won one Conference Championship and one Division Championship.
