Before the Florida Panthers hit the ice for their first NHL game, they participated in an NHL Expansion Draft in Quebec City, Quebec on June 24, 1993. The NHL rules for the expansion draft allowed teams to protect some existing players, but only one goalie. The first draft pick made by the Panthers was goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck.
By the end of the day, the Panthers had built the start of a team by drafting a total of twenty-four players. The team’s first ever NHL regular season game was a road trip to Chicago on October 6, 1993, where the Panthers did not lose. The game ended in a 4-all tie with the Blackhawks. When the Panthers played their first home game, October 12, 1993, it was in front of a sellout crowd of 14,372, and they lost the game 2-1 to Pittsburgh.
The history of the Florida Panthers may not be a long one, but it shows that there has been a lot of success early in the life of the team. Hockey pucks with the Florida Panthers logo on them are highly collectible as the logo is that of an endangered subspecies of the cougar native to southern Florida. Keep your pucks protected in our Florida Panthers Double Hockey Puck Display Case.
