When the New York Islanders burst on to the professional hockey scene, they became the first team to call Long Island, New York their home. They had an interesting start as well. As the NHL watched the rival WHA grow in leaps and bounds, there was a concern that there was a chance the World Hockey Association was going to try to plant a franchise on Long Island.
It would have been a smart political move by the league to get a foothold in one of the largest sports markets. To prevent that from happening the National Hockey League created the New York Islanders. The team caught on; the WHA eventually merged with the NHL and hockey continues to be played professionally in three locations in the metropolitan New York City area.
Fans love it as these teams (the Islanders, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils) have strong rivalries. If you have been collecting New York Islander souvenirs, you can now keep hockey pucks protected in our New York Islanders Double Hockey Puck Display Case.
