The New York Rangers is one of the oldest hockey franchises still in operation having joined the NHL in 1926 as part of the first expansion into the United States. The Rangers are considered one of the ‘Original Six’ teams which include Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. The New York Rangers made hockey history when they became the first NHL franchise in the United States to win the Stanley Cup. They managed this feat in the 1927-1928 season.
The Rangers came into existence when the NHL awarded a franchise to then-President of Madison Square Gardens George Lewis ‘Tex’ Rickard. The purpose of the franchise was to give the now-defunct New York Americans who played in the NHL from 1923-1942 in the same arena a team to play against. The Amerks, as they were called, ended up being far more successful than expected as soon as they started playing which inspired Rickard to try to bring another team to the arena although he had previously promised the Americans exclusivity. The new team wasn’t around long before they were nicknamed Tex’s Rangers.
The New York Rangers team colors are blue, red and white they are part of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.
