The Philadelphia Flyers came into being as part of a move by the NHL to freeze out any rival hockey league from establishing a team on the East Coast of United States. The NHL had been playing with the ‘Original Six’ teams all this while with talk of another league forming pushing the NHL to expand. The 1967 expansion doubled the size of the NHL, and one of those teams was the Philadelphia Flyers.
The idea for the team dates back to 1964 when Philadelphia Eagles vice president Ed Snider noticed a crowd of Boston Bruins fans lining up for game tickets. He had been at Boston Gardens watching a basketball game and thought it was odd that fans would be interested in watching a last place hockey team.
The Philadelphia Flyers proved to be anything but and have the second-best all-time win percentage in the NHL. Hockey pucks make great souvenirs, and if you have any, you’ll want to keep the protected in our dust free Philadelphia Flyers Double Hockey Puck Display Case.
