The Pittsburgh Penguins entered the NHL in 1967 as part of the league’s first major expansion but are not the first NHL team to call Pittsburgh home. From 1925-1930 the Pittsburgh Pirates were the rage and the city also hosted the AHL Pittsburgh Hornets from 1936-1956 and again from 1961 to 1967. The Penguins came about when state senator Jack McGregor began lobbying for a NHL franchise in 1965. The main purpose of trying to convince the NHL that Pittsburgh could support a franchise was to bring about a wave of urban renewal for the city.
The Penguin name was chosen and a contest was held where a number of entries confirmed the choice as fitting as the team played their first 42 seasons in the Pittsburgh Civic Arena known affectionately in the region as ‘The Igloo.’ The first logo used on the team jerseys was one of a penguin with skates and a hockey stick in front of a gold-colored triangle. This was a symbolic gesture referring to the “Golden Triangle” as downtown Pittsburgh is called.
The Pittsburgh Penguins team colors are black, Vegas gold and white and they play in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.
There have been a number of great players who have played for the Penguins and they include Mario Lemieux (1984-1997, 2000-2006), Jaromir Jagr (1990-2001), Sidney Crosby (2005-present), Ron Francis (1990-1998), Jean Pronovost (1968-1979), Tom Borrasso (1988-2000), Rick Kehoe (1974-1985), Evgeni Malkin (2006-present), Kevin Stevens (1987-1995, 2000-2002) and Paul Coffey (1987-1992).
The Pittsburgh Penguins have won five Stanley Cups (1990-1991, 1991-1992, 2008-2009, 2015-2016, 2016-2017), one Presidents' Trophy (1992-1993), 4 Conference Championships and 8 Division Championships. The Penguins also appeared in two Winter Classics winning the 1st annual event (2008) 2-1 in a shootout against Buffalo and losing the 4th annual event (2011) 3-1 to Washington. With the 2017 Stanley Cup win made the Peguins the first back to back champions in 19 years. The Detroit Red Wings were the last to do it in 1997-1998.
