Sports teams typically host a ‘name the team’ contest and with the new NHL franchise in Pittsburgh in 1967 that was exactly what happened. The home for the team was the Pittsburgh Civic Arena which was known in the region as simply ‘The Igloo’ and that was a term of endearment for the facility. The most entered team name, for a sports team to play hockey in an arena nicknamed the Igloo was…oddly enough Penguins.
Clearly, the choice was not only fitting but an appropriate type of name that allowed the team to market itself in many different ways using a logo that included a penguin. That would have been a marketing team’s dream to put the combination of a penguin in an igloo and start promoting it as a hockey team.
Imagine some of the conversations revolving around souvenirs and what to create to sell to fans. If you have any Pittsburgh Penguins pucks, you’ll want to keep them protected in our Pittsburgh Penguins Double Hockey Puck Display Case.
