The San Jose Sharks conducted a name-the-team contest shortly after the franchise was awarded to the California city. A contest such as this is a typical way in which a sports team is named as it gives the community a chance to have a part in the future of a team. Of the suggestions entered, over five thousand different names were suggested with the ‘Blades’ winning.
Well, that was until the team owners Gordon, and George Gund III said they didn’t like the name. They had a valid concern as they were not sure they wanted a team to have a name that could be a reference to a weapon. They came up with a simple solution to the problem and selected the runner-up name to be used.
Luckily that name happened to be ‘Sharks’ which fit into the California setting although two other teams in a different league had used the name for short periods of time.
