The Toronto Maple Leafs have only two retired jersey numbers, not including #99 that were retired league-wide to honor Wayne Gretzky. When Toronto retired jersey #6 in honor of player Ace Bailey they became the first team in National Hockey League history to retire a number.
Bailey signed with the Toronto St. Patricks in November 1926, and the team was renamed the Maple Leafs in Bailey’s first season. He was the top NHL scorer in 1928-1929 with 22 goals and 32 points in 44 games. He went on to be the Leafs top scorer in 1929-1930, but his career was cut short following an injury sustained on ice December 13, 1933.
He recovered but never played hockey again. The only other retired number is #5 in honor of player Bill Barilko. Jersey collectors look to retired numbers for a guide to building a collection around. If you have a autographed jersey, keep it stored in our Toronto Maple Leafs Jersey Display Case.
