The Toronto Maple Leafs has an interesting past that dates back to the start of the National Hockey League in 1917. The National Hockey Association was the league that had all the professional teams in it at the time, and a dispute with the owner of the Toronto Blueshirts actually led to the formation of the NHL. The NHA constitution would not allow the member teams to vote the Blueshirts owner out, so they decided to fold the league.
That left the Blueshirts owner in league with just one team. The former NHA owners formed the NHL and granted Toronto a temporary franchise to balance the playing schedule. The unnamed team was made up of former Toronto Blueshirts players. The team was eventually called the Arenas, then the St. Patricks and another ownership change saw the Maple Leafs name officially used.
Oddly enough, although the original team was made up of former Blueshirts players, the team colors have remained blue and white to this day. If you have a Maple Leafs hockey puck keep it secure in our Toronto Maple Leafs Double Hockey Puck Display Case.
